High Schools Seeking Speech and Debate Judges

By Beacon Staff

Flathead and Glacier high schools are looking for judges to help with the Kalispell Invitational Speech and Debate meet on Nov. 18 and Nov. 19.

According to Kala Lougheed, Flathead’s speech and debate coach, this is year’s meet is the biggest the schools have ever hosted.

“This weekend, more than a thousand competitors will be competing at the Kalispell Invitational Speech and Debate meet. As you may know, our local high school teams rank among the top in the state. The tournament we are hosting this weekend is the largest EVER. More than 900 hours of community judging are required to make this happen. We are still in need of 150 hours of judging,” Lougheed said.

Having attended a couple of speech and debate meets myself, I can attest to the professionalism, style and cleverness on display from Montana students at these events. The kids work extremely hard and the payoff – which judges see during the meet – is really entertaining.
