FBI Warns of Email Scam in State

By Beacon Staff

BILLINGS — Federal law enforcement officials are warning Montana residents to watch out for a scam email from someone falsely claiming to be an FBI agent in El Paso, Texas.

FBI officials said Tuesday that at least one individual may have sent money in response to the phony email, not realizing it was a scam.

The email claims “Special Agents” have confiscated a box at a Texas airport containing a large sum of money allegedly intended for the email recipient’s address. The message demands a response and threatens the recipient with possible arrest.

FBI agents ask that recipients not respond and instead report the scam to the federal government’s internet crime reporting center, located at www.ic3.gov.
