2 Major Fires Burning on Blackfeet Reservation

BROWNING – Tribal officials say gusty winds are fueling two major fires on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in northwestern Montana.

Blackfeet spokesman Wayne Smith says one fire started southeast of Browning just after 5 p.m. Wednesday and burned about eight miles east to the community of Blackfoot. He does not know how many acres have burned so far but says U.S. Highway 2 from Cut Bank to Browning has been closed.

Smith says another large fire was reported north of Browning at about the same time and is being spread by sustained winds of between 35 mph and 45 mph.

He says no injuries have been reported, but at least one family has been evacuated from a home. The cause of the fires wasn’t immediately clear.
