Telecom Tower Proposed for Glacier Park

WEST GLACIER — Glacier National Park officials say a telecommunications company is proposing to build an 80-foot tall telecommunications tower in the park’s St. Mary administrative area.

Glacier officials said the steel lattice structure would replace an existing 50-foot radio tower and improve the reliability and speed of internet access in the northwest Montana park.

The proposal comes from Louisiana-based CenturyLink, which bills itself as the third largest telecommunications company in the United States. The tower would be built on a concrete footing and include a 6-foot wide microwave dish for CenturyLink and up to three National Park Service antennas.

An environmental assessment of the tower is underway. Park officials say they will take public comment on the proposal through Friday, Feb. 3.
