PLACES: Blacktail Mountain Ski Area

By Beacon Staff

Chase the snow to Blacktail Mountain in Lakeside for an ideal day of family skiing.

Located on more than 1,000 acres of U.S. National Forest land and featuring 1,440 feet of vertical elevation, there is plenty of mountain to shred for any ability while the north-facing slopes keep the snow light and dry and help protect runs from wind.

Blacktail offers 15 percent beginner and expert slopes and 70 percent intermediate, creating a perfect environment for families and novices to work on technique or learn in a relaxed environment. Daily lessons are also available.

Blacktail is also designed so that access is at the summit. Everybody, no matter what skill level, has a chance to see the spectacular views overlooking Flathead Lake to Glacier National Park and the Mission, Whitefish and Cabinet mountain ranges.

Also, check out the Independence Terrain Park with a long box, a short box on a table top jump, upper Clearcut roller jumps and intermediate jump features.

For a trail map and web cams or more information on lessons, the Young Bucks Race Team or other programs visit www.blacktailmountain.com. Blacktail is open Wednesday through Sunday.

How to get there: Take Blacktail Mountain Road off U.S. Highway 93 in Lakeside at the Blacktail IGA. The road immediately curves left. Follow Blacktail Mountain Road to the summit.
