Whitefish Named Top 25 Ski Town in the World

By Beacon Staff

National Geographic sure has good taste.

One of the all-time great magazines recently dubbed Whitefish one of the 25 best ski towns in the world. Whitefish made a pretty distinguished shortlist alongside towns in Italy, British Columbia, New Zealand and across the U.S.

It’s definitely a nice distinction and shout-out. This is one of those articles I’ll read in the shoulder season when snow is melting, the sun is still vacationing somewhere far away and I need to be reminded of our treasured whereabouts.

The article says Whitefish “has been quietly delivering glitz-free Montana skiing for over half a century.” It goes on to recommend the best places to stay, eat, hold an after party and adventure. Overall, it’s a nice pat on the back, and a much deserved one.

Bozeman also earned some love from NatGeo. Here’s the complete list of the 25 Best Ski Towns in the World:

Ketchum, Idaho
Stowe, Vermont
Wanaka, New Zealand
Jackson, Wyoming
Telluride, Colorado
Stowe, Vermont
Banff, Canada
North Conway, New Hampshire
Whistler, British Columbia
Truckee, California
Park City, Utah
Taos, New Mexico
Mont Tremblant, Quebec, Canada
Bend, Oregon
Kitzbühel, Austria
Niseko, Japan
Aspen, Colorado
Crested Butte, Colorado
Whitefish, Montana
Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy
Chamonix, France
Bozeman, Montana
Zermatt, Switzerland
Fernie, British Columbia, Canada
Girdwood, Alaska

Here’s a nice video made by the Stumptown Historical Society. It’s a short documentary focusing on the annual Winter Carnival, which just wrapped up last week. The video sums up winter in Whitefish pretty nicely and should give outsiders a pretty good idea how much fun we have during the winter.
