Avalanche Classes to be Held Every Saturday in March

By Beacon Staff

With a recent slate of avalanches wreaking havoc in the backcountry, search and rescue professionals will provide avalanche awareness and education at popular backcountry access points in Flathead County, beginning March 3 and continuing throughout the month.

The sessions are a voluntary outreach effort from the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office, North Valley Search and Rescue, Flathead Search and Rescue, Flathead Nordic Ski Patrol, and the U.S. Forest Service.

The objectives of the sessions are:

• Public education related to safety equipment, terrain awareness, snow conditions, and proper planning.
• Inform the public of avalanche statistics regarding injuries, fatalities, and search and rescue response.
• Answer questions regarding safe and responsible winter recreation.
