WHITEFISH – State wildlife officials say a vehicle struck and killed an adult male wolf on U.S. Highway 93 west of Whitefish over the weekend.
Witnesses first reported a dog was hit Saturday night, but when a Flathead County animal control officer responded, they found it was a wolf.
The wolf wasn’t wearing a collar, but Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials plan on checking to see if it was microchipped.
FWP biologist Erik Wenum says a nearby ridge area leads many different animals to make their way across U.S. Highway 93, and it’s a fairly common place for wildlife to get hit.
Another driver reported nearly hitting a wolf in the same general area on Friday night.
