A Kalispell police officer shot and killed an aggressive dog on Wednesday night after the Mastiff/Labrador mix charged him.
Shortly after 6 p.m. police received a report from a man who had been attacked by two dogs near the 600 block of First Avenue West. Three officers responded and found the dogs near the St. Matthew’s School parking lot. The officers cornered the dogs in the playground and were waiting for a “catch pole” to arrive so they could safely apprehend them.
While they were waiting, according to a press release from the department, one of the dogs charged at an officer, growling and showing its teeth. The officer shot the dog and it died at the scene.
The other dog was caught once the pole arrived. Later on, according to police, four young men approached the officers and said that they had also been attacked by the dogs.
An investigation into the attacks is ongoing.
