Polson Standoff Ends With Arrest

By Beacon Staff

A Polson man was arrested Monday morning after holing up in his home with a high-powered weapon near Kings Point. Glen Smith, 67, fired the gun while officers surrounded the home, although it’s unclear if police were the target.

At around 2:45 a.m. on March 12, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office got a call about an abandoned vehicle on Kings Point Road. When police officers arrived they realized there had been a crash and brought in the Montana Highway Patrol to investigate. While trying to contact the owner, police got a hold of a woman who said she had received a call from Smith, the vehicle’s owner, and she felt he sounded suicidal.

Deputies arrived at Smith’s home shortly after 4 a.m. and saw Smith inside with a high-powered rifle. Officers from the Flathead Tribal Police, Montana Highway Patrol and Lake County Sheriff’s Office then established a perimeter around the home. While surrounding the home, officers heard four gunshots fired from inside. The road around the home was closed and soon after that Flathead County’s SWAT team was asked to standby.

Soon after 5:30 a.m., authorities established verbal communication with Smith and he was taken into custody without incident.
