PLACES: Pond Skim at Whitefish Mountain Resort

By Beacon Staff

It is time again to celebrate the end of ski season so dust off your wildest costume, strap on your skis or snowboard and show off your skimming skills at Whitefish Mountain Resort’s Pond Skimming event on Saturday, April 7. In its seventh year, the festive event features costume-clad skiers bombing their way across a pond.

If you don’t have the nerve to participate, this is a great event for spectators of all ages. The competition is limited to participants over 21. Competitors are required to wear their snowboard and skis appropriately as they use their momentum to attempt crossing an 80-foot pond of water. Costumes are encouraged, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

The event is judged individually based on the longest skim. After each round, the starting line is moved lower down the slope making it more difficult to gain speed to make it over the pond. Keep an eye out during the first round for some of the best crashes.

Participants should gather at 1:45 p.m. with the event starting at 2:30 p.m. Awards are given out 30 minutes after the final skim and include best costume, best crash and longest skim.

How to get there: From downtown Whitefish take Baker Avenue over the train tracks. Baker Avenue becomes Wisconsin Avenue. Continue on Wisconsin. Turning right, take Big Mountain Road up the mountain.
