By Beacon Staff

An adult male grizzly bear was hit by a vehicle and killed on U.S. Highway 93 north of St. Ignatius, according to the Flathead Indian Reservation Tribal Wildlife Management Program.

The male grizzly, weighing close to 600 pounds, was struck at mile marker 35 at about 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 5.

Dale Becker, Manager for the Tribal Wildlife Management Program, said the bear might have been the same one that had used a wildlife crossing in the area during the past two years.

This is the first grizzly bear death reported on the Flathead Indian Reservation this year.

Drivers who accidentally strike a grizzly bear are asked to report the incident to Stacy Courville, Tribal Wildlife Management Program at 883-2888.
