PLACES: West Shore State Park

By Beacon Staff

With the days getting longer and warmer, it’s time to start thinking about getting outside and on the water. And the West Shore State Park is one of the best spots to do both along Flathead Lake. Located south of Lakeside along U.S. Highway 93, the park also features a newly rebuilt boat ramp that will improve access for the public.

Besides boating the lake, there are plenty of activities available at the park, including hiking, biking and camping on 129 acres of land. From the shores of Flathead Lake, you will enjoy panoramic views of the Mission and Swan mountains. Two road loops provide access to almost 30 campsites, some of which can be reserved in advance.

According to Montana State Parks, the West Shore State Park is quickly becoming one of the most popular spots in the Flathead Valley. During the summer of 2011, the site had more than 16,500 visitors, a 4 percent increase over the previous year. Due to that increase, the state agency decided to extend the boat ramp by 15 feet to give people a little extra room when launching their watercrafts.
