Noted author David James Duncan will headline a reading at the Whitefish Review issue 11 launch party on June 2. For the first time in the literary journal’s history, the editors selected a theme: “The Wild Issue.”
The biannual journal features writing, photography and art. Bylines have included John Irving, Tom Brokaw and William Kittredge. This year’s “wild” theme brought in a record number of submissions, guest editor Cristina Eisenberg said.
“For our wild issue, we asked for submissions that explore the untamable and wild in astonishing ways, and we got an avalanche of them,” said Eisenberg, an ecologist, editor and author. In 2010 she published her first book, “The Wolf’s Tooth,” and is currently working on her second title.
Eisenberg said in the end editors chose to feature the work of 44 artists and writers. However, founding editor Brian Schott said that was no easy task.
“We were particularly impressed with the quality of submissions for this issue,” he said. “I think that our take on ‘wild’ will surprise readers. As we worked to create the aesthetic for this issue, we pushed beyond wild ‘nature’ and looked for expanded definitions and art that ran the spectrum of ‘wild’ – pushing the limits of what creative folks are able to do with words and images.”
Copies of the 180-page Whitefish Review issue 11 will be available in bookstores across Montana and the West beginning in June and sell for $12.
The June 2 launch party will be the first chance to grab a copy and will also feature live readings and music, a silent auction, appetizers and drinks. There is a $10 suggested entry donation.
