BUTTE — Pistol shooter Nick Mowrer of Butte has earned a spot on the U.S. shooting team competing in the 2012 Olympics in London this summer.

The Montana Standard reports the 2007 Butte High graduate finished second in the Olympic Trials for 50-meter free pistol on Saturday in Fort Benning, Ga.

Mowrer edged out 2008 Olympian Brian Beaman of North Dakota to join first-place finisher Army Sgt. Daryl Szarenski of Alabama on the U.S. free pistol team. The shooting pistol competition is set for Aug. 5.

For the last three years, Mowrer has lived and trained at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., while also completing his degree in welding at Pike’s Peak Community College.
