As the longest days of the year approach, Glacier National Park is gearing up for summer, with a full schedule of ranger-led activities in the park. Everything from hikes to boat rides will provide visitors with not only a way to get outside, but a chance to learn about the history of the park.
The ranger-led hikes last anywhere from one hour to half a day and some trails are more challenging than others. Visitors, especially families, are encouraged to check out the Discovery Cabin in the Apgar Visitor Center. The historic cabin features hands-on activities and volunteers are around to answer questions about various predators and prey that inhabit the park. On the east side of the park, visitors can check out the 2011 mural “Touched By Glacier,” which is also displayed on the 2012 park pass.
Younger visitors can partake in the Junior Ranger Program, which provides kids of all ages with free activity guides and they can even earn a junior ranger badge and certificate.
Visitors are reminded to be prepared when participating in ranger-led activities, especially guided hikes, where sturdy foot wear is essential. Also, bring plenty of food, water and additional clothing, because the weather can change quickly in Glacier.
