On June 15, the Flathead Audubon Society dedicated a new 750-foot ADA -certified trail at the Owen Sowerwine Natural Area. The new trail features a kiosk and a handicapped accessible gate.
Located along the Flathead and Stillwater rivers, the nature area features numerous plants and animals and is an easy walk for a pleasant afternoon. According to representatives of Flathead Audubon, the nature area was first designated in the 1970s and is on a parcel of school trust land.
Local companies donated money and materials for the trail, including Flathead Electric Cooperative, LHC Inc., Sliters Lumber and Building Supply, Midway Rental and Murdoch’s Farm and Ranch Supply. The Montana Audubon Society also assisted with the project.
The new nature trail is located just east of Kalispell and is open to the public for low-impact recreation, although a state recreation permit is required. The trail is maintained by the Flathead Audubon group and can be used by birders and student groups alike.
How to get there: From Kalispell, drive south on U.S. Highway 93. Two miles south of town take a left onto Kelly Road and drive a half mile to Willow Glen Drive. Drive another .8 miles and take a right on Treasure Lane. The nature trail is at the end of the road.
