HELENA — The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude 3.7 earthquake shook the Seeley Lake and Ovando areas Sunday night, but no damage has been reported.

Mike Stickney, director of the Earthquake Studies Office at Montana Tech, said Monday a foreshock that preceded the earthquake by 25 seconds had a magnitude of 3.1.

The USGS initially said the earthquake was a magnitude 3.2, but Stickey says because the two temblors happened so close together seismograph stations were still recording energy from the foreshock when the main shock occurred

The epicenter was 21 miles northeast of Seeley Lake and 9 miles below the earth’s surface. The quake happened just after 10 p.m.

Brad Weltzen, who lives south of Seeley Lake, told the Missoulian his family heard the house crack and make noise.
