Two days after a series of dramatic rock and mud slides closed Going-to-the-Sun Road between Avalanche Creek and Logan Pass, the National Park Service reopened the road on Thursday afternoon.
On Tuesday afternoon, a powerful rain storm caused 12 mud and rock slides on Going-to-the-Sun Road, trapping almost 150 vehicles and damaging one car. That vehicle had to be towed from the scene and the passengers inside were treated for minor injuries.
At about 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, road crews and contractors finished removing debris and reopened the road to visitors. Workers mostly used excavators to clear the way, but at times had to resort to hand shoveling, according to a press release.
Yet the iroad may not be out of the woods just yet. The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch from 12 p.m. until 12 a.m. on Friday. Heavy rain, up to two inches an hour, lightning, hail and winds up to 60 miles per hour are forecasted. The Park Service urged visitors to stay alert for signs of more mud and rock slides during that time.
