The American Dream, Two-Fold

By Beacon Staff

Tourists who decide to become business owners and residents in the Flathead Valley realize it’s possible to have it all and make their dream a reality. Those who succeed are living the American dream two-fold – living in God’s country while operating a successful business.

Montana West Economic Development has been instrumental in helping local business owners — once tourists — grow and sustain their businesses. Founders of local businesses like NxGen, Total Label USA, Hurraw!, and Quickee started out as tourists. Neil Stuber, owner of Hurraw! lip balm, said “The initial draw here is the profound beauty. There’s a sort of gravitational pull. We’re past the ‘location-based business model.’ Ninety percent of business can be done over the Internet … I don’t view location as a hurdle.” Neil and his wife manufacture all-natural, vegan lip balm in Whitefish. Originally from New York, he said that land is more affordable in the Flathead compared to other areas of the nation, making our valley a competitive location for manufacturers.

These summer months always attract tourists, and local businesses rise to accommodate their needs. Those who choose to start a business here are taking a risk because one tourist season can make or break a business. Yvette Haines, owner of Quickee sandwich shop in Whitefish, was well aware of that risk. Yet her and her family living in Europe went through the long and painful process of acquiring a visa to own a business here. “I don’t know what it is about the area around here but it pulls you in. We took a huge risk, because we’ve invested everything we have into living here,” she said. “But it’s rewarding and a lot of hard work, there is nothing here for nothing.”

The saying “Don’t mix business with pleasure” has become passé with business owners uprooting and moving to areas like the Flathead. Destination marketing is used as a proactive, strategic, visitor-centered plan to develop the economic and cultural aspect of a location.

Montana West centers around this marketing strategy, using the slogan “One Valley One Vision.” The hope is to create a sense of community people cannot find elsewhere. Kellie Danielson, president and CEO of Montana West Economic Development, is a prime example of a former tourist turned “Montanan.” The natural amenities, values and safety played a role in her relocation, and ultimately — like many entrepreneurs and business people — she decided to stay. Longtime residents and business owners continue to welcome newcomers who want to do the same. The American dream is alive and well in the Flathead.
