The U.S. Department of Transportation authorized a $3 million grant for Glacier National Park to repair a section of Going-to-the-Sun Road between Siyeh Bend and St. Mary, according to an announcement from Montana Sen. Max Baucus. The grant is part of the DOT’s Public Lands Highways Discretionary (PLHD) Program, which was reauthorized through the new highway bill.
“Going to the Sun Road is the crown jewel of Montana which is why I’ve long fought to make sure this historic road has the funding necessary for maintenance. This is great news and a prime example of why the highway bill is so important for Montana,” Baucus said in a statement. “The highway bill means more good-paying jobs for Montana families and will make federal funding available for important stretches of highway like Going-to-the-Sun Road.”
Baucus was a chief architect of the new highway bill that successfully passed through the Senate and House.
The PLHD program is designed to improve highways and transit facilities that are within or adjacent to American Indian reservations and federal public lands. PLHD funds can be used for the state/local matching share for federal aid highway funds and there is no matching requirement for grant applicants.
