EXPLORE: The Highline Trail

By Beacon Staff

With its spectacular views, it is no wonder why the Highline Trail is one of the most popular routes in Glacier National Park.

The trail is 7.6 miles from Logan Pass to the Granite Park Chalet, a remote backcountry destination that is open for overnight stays until Sept. 9.

One of the best ways to tackle the trail is to park at The Loop, along the Going-to-the-Sun Road and take one of the shuttle buses up to Logan Pass.

From there you hike along the Garden Wall, high above the Sun Road. About seven miles from Logan Pass you can take a short but demanding spur trail 1,000 feet up the side of the mountain.

At the chalet, you can grab a soda and take a look around the historic buildings before hiking the final four miles down to your car. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time for the entire hike, which is about 12 miles.

How to get there

From West Glacier and the entrance to Glacier National Park drive 31 miles to Logan Pass.

The trailhead is just before the parking lot, on the left.

You can also drive 24 miles to the Loop and park there, taking a shuttle the final few miles to the trailhead.
