Veterans Ceremony at Demersville Cemetery on Sept. 11

By Beacon Staff

The Flathead County Clerk and Recorders Office is organizing a ceremony at the Demersville Cemetery to honor veterans on Sept. 11.

Beginning at 2 p.m., the ceremony will highlight almost 20 veterans who served in the military and are buried at Demersville. The event will feature a ceremonial playing of bagpipes as well as “Taps” and a 21-gun salute. Established in 1890, the Demersville Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Flathead County.

The event grew out of an idea from staff at the Clerk and Recorders Office, which is in charge of the cemetery. The names of those veterans who have been identified will be recognized and the local VFW will present a flag to the Flathead County Commissioners.

“We want to pay homage to the veterans who have been buried there,” said Paula Robinson, the county clerk and recorder and election administrator.

“We’re trying to get the community out and it gives them a chance say thank you in another way to the people who served this country.”

New gravestones were recently laid at the cemetery for veterans.

The cemetery is just north of the County Animal Shelter, located at 225 Cemetery Road.
