Recent Polls Split as Senate Race Remains Close

By Beacon Staff

Public Policy Polling, a Democratic pollster, released its survey of Montana’s U.S. Senate race Wednesday and found incumbent Sen. Jon Tester leading Congressman Denny Rehberg 45-43. Last month, a Rasmussen Reports poll, which tends to favor Republicans, found Rehberg leading Tester 47-43.

The race remains extremely tight no matter who is conducting the polling, although Rehberg has shown at least a modest lead in most polls and, according to the congressman’s campaign, 10 of the last 12.

PPP also found Mitt Romney leading Barack Obama in the presidential race in Montana, 50-45. That’s much closer than what Rasmussen found in August, when it had Romney leading by 17 percentage points, 55-38.

In its survey, PPP also pointed out that both Tester’s and Rehberg’s favorability ratings are under water: 46-48 for Tester and 42-52 for Rehberg.

This race is clearly going down to the wire. We’ve polled it 5 times now and they’ve been with 2 points of each other 4 out of those 5 times.
