North Fork Drowning Victim Indentified

By Beacon Staff

Glacier National Park officials have identified the man who drowned in the North Fork of the Flathead River on Sept. 25.

David Hughes from Highlands Ranch, Colo., 67, was fishing in the park near Camas Creek with a local relative when they lost sight of each other due to a bend in the river. When Hughes’ relative couldn’t find him, he called for help.

Rescue crews found Hughes underwater, about 100 yards down from Camas Creek. He was wearing waders but not a life jacket. He was declared dead at the scene, and the cause of death is still under investigation.

“Visitors to Glacier National Park are reminded to always keep personal safety in mind by being prepared for changing weather conditions, using personal protective equipment as appropriate, and communicating recreational and travel plans, including estimated return time, with someone. Drowning is the number one cause of death in the park. Caution should always be used near water and life jackets should be worn,” park officials said in a prepared statement.
