State wildlife officials are reminding hunters to review regulations for the area in preparation for the upcoming deer and elk general hunting season. Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks recently sent out a list with a few items to remember:
— No youth antlerless elk hunt this year: there is no special antlerless elk hunt for youth hunters in Region 1. Youth hunters must follow the standard regulations for elk in Region 1 hunting districts.
— Special youth deer hunt, Oct. 18-19: This is for deer only. Youth hunters must be accompanied by a person 18 years of age or older who is not hunting. In this statewide, two-day hunt, youth hunters with a general deer license (A-tag) or deer B-license may take deer species and sex otherwise available on their license the first day of the general firearm season in the specific hunting district. In Region 1, it is either- sex for whitetail and antlered buck-only for mule deer for youth.
— Youth hunter defined: Youth hunters are legally licensed hunters between 12-15 year of age, and legally licensed 11-year olds who will reach 12 years old by Jan. 16, 2013.
— Standard deer and elk season: Hunting season opens on Saturday, Oct. 20 and runs through Sunday, Nov. 25. Hunters should check the hunting regulations for the area they plan to hunt. Hunting regulations are available at all license outlets and at FWP headquarters.
