DILLON – A 56-year-old man was shot and killed by a stray bullet while hunting in Beaverhead County over the weekend.

Sheriff Jay Hansen says Edward Anderson of Superior was shot in the chest while hunting in the Black Mountain area west of Dillon Sunday.

Sandy Cotham reported shortly after 5 p.m. that her husband, Bud Cotham, and her son-in-law were several hours overdue. A family friend located Bud Cotham, who said Anderson had not returned to his starting point as planned.

Hansen found Anderson’s body.

Witnesses said Anderson had been in an area where other hunters were shooting earlier in the morning

Coroner Ron Briggs says Anderson could not have inflicted the wound upon himself and officials determined he was killed by a stray bullet.

Hansen says Anderson had a wife and three children.
