EXPLORE: Soccer State Championships

By Beacon Staff

The soccer state championships for Class A and Class AA will be decided in the Flathead Valley this week.

The Whitefish boys will defend their Class A title against Billings Central at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27 on the Rollie and Heide Smith Youth Sports Park Soccer Field in Whitefish.

The Columbia Falls girls will try to unseat four-time defending champion Billings Central at home at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The Class AA boys and girls state tournament is at Kidsports Complex Thursday through Saturday. The Glacier girls (5-7-1) are the lone local team still playing and face Bozeman (11-1) at noon on Thursday in the opening round.

The Whitefish Bulldogs (14-0) are chasing the program’s fifth state championship, but face a familiar nemesis. Billings Central upset Whitefish 5-1 at home in the 2009 state championship. In 2008, Central spoiled Whitefish’s title hopes in the semifinals, winning 3-2. The Rams are 13-1 this season.

Columbia Falls (12-1-1) faces an undefeated Billings Central (14-0). The Wildkats are after their second title. They won in 2004.
