Bullock Campaign Cited for Check Signatures

By Beacon Staff

HELENA – The state deputy commissioner for political practices says Steve Bullock’s campaign violated election rules by writing 11 checks that were signed by someone other than the campaign’s treasurer or deputy treasurer.

Thursday’s ruling by Deputy Commissioner Jay Dufrechou says the checks totaling $15,472.15 in expenses were written by someone other than the campaign treasurer or deputy treasurer.

Bullock campaign officials say staff members signed the checks when the treasurer was out sick and they didn’t know then it was against the rules.

There is no allegation that the money was received or spent improperly other than who signed the checks. Dufrechou’s office did not immediately respond to a query on whether the campaign faced any penalties.

Bullock faces Republican Rick Hill in a close race for governor.
