Start the New Year with a ‘First Day Hike’ at Lone Pine

By Beacon Staff

Interested in beginning 2013 with a nice hike outside?

Montana State Parks staff will be leading a guided trek at Lone Pine in Kalispell on Jan. 1.

The hike is part of an annual nationwide “First Day Hikes” event sponsored by America’s State Parks. The local hike begins at 11 a.m. and participants will tour trails throughout the park and enjoy a warming fire by the picnic shelter. The activity will be roughly two miles through a forested area populated by song birds, squirrels and white-tailed deer. The state park is located at 300 Lone Pine Road.

Hikers should dress for the winter weather, wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots appropriate to the conditions and bring water and snacks.

“Our state parks are beautiful in the winter and Montanans know the thrill of embracing the cold weather outdoors,” said Chas Van Genderen, Administrator for Montana State Parks. “First Day Hikes are a great way to get outside, exercise and kick off the New Year with friends and family.”

Last year roughly 14,000 people participated in First Day Hikes nationwide and covered more than 30,000 miles in state parks, according to Montana State Parks.
