Distracted Driver Strikes, Kills Missoula Teen

By Beacon Staff

MISSOULA — Authorities say a distracted driver struck and killed an 18-year-old pedestrian in Missoula.

Missoula County Sheriff’s Office says Chance Geery was hit by a car Monday afternoon as he was walking with another person along Mullan Road.

Geery, a Hellgate High School senior and a defensive lineman for the football team, died after efforts to resuscitate him failed.

Detective Sgt. Travis Welsh says neither alcohol nor drugs appear to have been a factor in the crash.

Welsh tells the Missoulian the driver was distracted, but did not say by what, other than it did not involve a cellphone.

He says it is too soon in the investigation to know if the driver will be charged.
