Governor Signs Bill Criminalizing Bath Salts

By Beacon Staff

HELENA — Gov. Steve Bullock is signing a bill into law that criminalizes a new designer drug commonly known as “bath salts” or “spice.”

The law targets drugs that are specifically designed to avoid the detection by law enforcement and mimic other drugs that are also made from synthetic compounds, like methamphetamines.

Under the measure designed by Attorney General Tim Fox, the manufacturing, selling, distributing or possession of bath salts will now be illegal.

House Bill 140 sponsored by Republican Rep. Tom Berry, of Colstrip, received overwhelming bi-partisan in both the House and Senate.

Bullock signed the measure into law on Tuesday in a ceremony with Fox.
