Glacier seniors Jackson Barber and Kaleb Mitchell are both recipients of the 2013 Blewett Wrestling Scholarship, awarded to the top wrestlers from each classification.
For the seventh year in a row Alexander (Zander) Blewett, III, a lawyer in Great Falls, offered four $1,000 scholarships to the top high school wrestlers around the state who displayed the best combined qualities of wrestling and academic achievement.
Three of the scholarship recipients won state championships and participated in the 2013 Tournament of Champions, a Montana all-star high school wrestling tournament also sponsored by Blewett’s law firm.
“The applicants were impressive as ever,” Blewett said in a news release. “We’ve never had two state champs with perfect GPA’s apply for the same scholarship, so we felt compelled to award an additional scholarship this year to recognize the tremendous accomplishments of these student athletes.”
The winners are as follows:
Jackson Barber of Glacier High School: Barber was a 2013 state champion at 160 pounds who carries a 4.0 GPA and will attend Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., where he will study exercise science/orthopedics and compete in wrestling. After completing college he hopes to attend medical school.
Kaleb Mitchell of Glacier High School: Mitchell was a 2013 state champion at 140 pounds who carries a 4.0 GPA and will attend the Colorado School of Mines where he will study engineering.
Tyler Kinn of Dawson County High School: Kinn was a two-time state champion and four-time placer in the state wrestling tournament. Kinn carries a 3.63 GPA.
Erik Kelly of Chester: Kelly participated at the state tournament three times and earned a 3.86 GPA. He will attend Montana State University where he intends to study political science.
“We love wrestling for the life lessons it teaches and these kids embody what this great sport is all about,” said Blewett.
