Pickup Hits Two Missoula Pedestrians, Killing One

By Beacon Staff

MISSOULA — A pickup driven by a suspected drunken driver struck two sisters as they walked along a Missoula sidewalk, killing one and injuring the other.

Missoula Police Detective Sgt. Travis Welsh says the 38-year-old man appeared to be driving westbound on the street at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday when his pickup crossed the road and drove onto the sidewalk, striking Roberta and Pamela Demmert.

The women were taken to the hospital, where Roberta was pronounced dead.

Tom George Vineyard was found in the cab of the pickup that struck the women. He is charged with vehicular homicide while under the influence and negligent vehicular assault. Court records say his blood-alcohol level was 0.239, or nearly four times the legal limit.

He was scheduled to make an initial appearance in Justice Court on Thursday afternoon.
