DEER LODGE — A convicted sex offender has escaped from the Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge.

Prison spokeswoman Linda Moodry says 42-year-old Dean Randolph Jess escaped at about 11 a.m. Monday.

Officials say he was working for motor vehicle maintenance on a service call when he left prison property. The vehicle he was in was found on the southern edge of the prison ranch. Moodry says officials do not know where he may be traveling or what mode of transportation he is using. He was wearing a blue shirt and pants.

Jess is described as being Caucasian, 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing about 180 pounds. He has green eyes and a shaved head.

Anyone with information on his location is asked to call local law enforcement.

Jess was sentenced in Park County.
