EXPLORE: Douglas Hill

By Beacon Staff

For those looking for a little motorized adventure, the Douglas Hill Off-Highway Vehicle Area is a great spot near Eureka, along the shores of Lake Koocanusa.

Douglas Hill has approximately 9 miles of trail as well as 200 acres of off-road area open to both highway and non-highway vehicles.

The site is maintained as part of the Rexford Ranger District on the Kootenai National Forest.

But even if off-roading doesn’t interest you, Douglas Hill offers spectacular views of Lake Koocanusa and the surrounding area just below the Canadian border.

There is a small campground and plenty of access to the water’s edge where you can enjoy a nice walk along the beach.

How to get there:

From downtown Eureka, drive north on U.S. Highway 93 about 2 miles to the intersection with Montana Highway 37.

Travel west 2 miles to the Old State Highway 37 and turn right.

Follow it another two miles to the Douglas Hill Road to gain access to the Douglas Hill OFV.
