Information Sought in $100,000 Equipment Theft

By Beacon Staff

The owners at Glacier Stone Supply in Kalispell are asking the public for any tips that may lead to the arrest of those involved in stealing over $100,000 worth of equipment from its shop on Whitefish Stage Road.

Company president Tony Kavanagh said on Monday afternoon that the theft probably occurred on Sunday. The thieves broke in to the shop and made off with over $100,000 in tools, equipment and supplies, he said.

To add insult to injury, the thieves apparently loaded the stolen equipment into a company, one-ton utility truck, complete with a welder, a compressor and a crane.

“The vehicle will probably turn up,” Kavanagh said. “Trying to get all the tools and equipment back is tough.”

The stone company provides Northwest Montana rock for architectural projects and landscaping, and has been open since 2003. Kavanagh said the insurance for his business is such that most of the cost to replace the stolen goods will come out of pocket due to a large deductible.

Kavanagh said he has been in touch with the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office, and that the stone company and the sheriff are working on getting the word out to pawn shops and keeping an eye online for people attempting to sell the pilfered equipment.

“I don’t get it. I don’t understand how people feel that that’s how they make their living,” Kavanagh said. “It’s pretty brazen. It affects people’s jobs.”

Glacier Stone Company is offering a $2,500 reward for information in this case, Kavanagh said. Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 406-752-8477 or the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office at 406-758-5585.
