Glacier Park’s St. Mary Campground Closed Due to Bears

By Beacon Staff

WEST GLACIER — Glacier National Park officials have closed a campground on the east side of the park due to increased bear activity.

Earlier this week, the St. Mary Campground was limited to hard-sided camping. However, more grizzly and black bears are turning up in and around the campground and efforts to haze them away have been unsuccessful.

At this time of year, bears are eating more as they prepare for hibernation. An abundant berry crop in the campground is attracting the hungry bears.

Park officials say the campground will be closed until bear activity decreases.
