FVCC Celebrates American Indian Heritage Day with Community Lecture

By Beacon Staff

Flathead Valley Community College’s Multicultural Affairs Office will welcome Salish tribal elder Alec Quequesah and several Salish performers for a lecture and presentation of traditional song in celebration of American Indian Heritage Day on Sept. 27.

The last Friday of every September was declared American Indian Heritage Day by Montana Legislature in 2009 to encourage all Montanans to reflect on and celebrate American Indian culture and heritage.

Quequesah was born in St. Ignatius and has lived his entire life on the Flathead Reservation. He has been teaching the Salish language full time at Salish Kootenai College since 2003. He is best known for his knowledge of the traditional way of the Salish people. Quequesah has also served as the emcee of the annual Arlee Celebration Powwow.

Free and open to the public, the presentation will take place at 10 a.m. in the large community meeting room inside the Arts and Technology Building on campus.
