By Beacon Staff

A 60-year-old student at Flathead Valley Community College died on Monday after sustaining injuries caused by a fall from scaffolding.

Peter Mahlum of Bigfork fell from scaffolding on Hutton Ranch Road at about 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 23. He was a student in the Building Trades Program at FVCC, and was working on a class project at the time of the fall.

He was taken to Kalispell Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

“It’s a very sad day for us on the FVCC campus,” FVCC President Jane Karas said in a prepared statement. “One of our students was in an unfortunate accident on campus that involved him falling from scaffolding…Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time. First responders arrived on the scene of the accident immediately, and I would like to thank them for their efforts in caring for our student. The safety of our students is our first priority; We take this matter very seriously and are involved in the investigation.”

Karas said the college would continue to provide information on the fall as it becomes available.

The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into the fall.
