Teigan Avery came out ahead in the sequel to last year’s state tournament.
The Glacier sophomore shot a 1-over 73 in the second round of the Class AA state golf tournament in Missoula on Wednesday to win the championship. Avery carded a two-round score of 145, edging two-time defending champion Kortney McNeil of Billings Senior by one stroke at Canyon River Golf Club.
Last year McNeil rallied in the final round to edge Avery by two strokes.
This year McNeil seemed to be following the same script. She shot a 5-over 77 in the opening round while Avery jumped atop the leaderboard with a par 72. McNeil stormed back on the second day and cut the lead to one stroke after the first nine holes. But this time, Avery held firm and closed out the impressive victory.
Jenna Jensen from Flathead earned all-state after placing 11th with a total score of 175.
Billings West won the team title with 680 points, edging Butte by eight strokes.
On the boys side, Glacier’s Tommy Mann tied for fifth, Cody Sherrill tied for 10th, Scott Larson tied for 15th and the Wolfpack placed sixth as a team.
Mann shot 76-73— 149, Sherrill shot 77-73—150 and Larson carded 80-74—154 and last year’s champs tallied 619 points.
Flathead’s Ryan Keenan tied for 10th, 77-73—150.
Austin Berg of Billings West won the individual title in a playoff against Cody Babinecz of Great Falls. Berg finished 76-70—146.
Billings West also won the team title with 606 points, edging Missoula Hellgate by three strokes.
The Class A state tournament begins tomorrow in Polson.
