Flathead Soccer Team Ends Four-Year Winless Streak

Haakon Sande scored in the 60th minute of last weekend’s crosstown soccer match with Glacier and the Braves held on to win 1-0. The victory snapped a 47-match winless streak that dated back to the fall of 2009.

Eli Frandsen assisted on the game-winning goal and Chandler Escalante stopped five shots on goal for Flathead, which improved to 1-6-1. Glacier fell to 0-8-1.

The Flathead girls also picked up a 1-0 victory over Glacier. Paige Birky scored off an assist from Anna Milheim early in the first half, Zoe Zander stopped eight shots for the shutout and the Bravettes improved to 4-3-1. Glacier dropped to 4-4.

The state tournament kicks off in Helena, Oct. 31-Nov. 2. With only four matches remaining, the Flathead girls are third in the standings and Glacier is fourth. Both local boys teams are at the bottom of the standings.

In Class A, the playoffs begin next week. The Whitefish girls (9-1 overall) are atop the Northern A standings and Columbia Falls (4-2-3) is second. Polson (5-4-1) is third, Bigfork (2-8) is fourth and Libby (0-10) is fifth.

For boys, Whitefish (7-1-2) is in first, Libby (3-5-2) is second, Bigfork (3-5-2) is third, Columbia Falls (4-4-1) is fourth and Polson (0-10) is fifth.
