EXPLORE: Whitefish Trails

By Beacon Staff

It would appear that this past weekend’s big winter storm was a lot of wind and not much winter in the Flathead. While that may be unwelcomed news for snow fans, it’s great for those who want to get in one more hike before the snow flies.

An awesome and quick getaway is the Whitefish Trails, located just west of Whitefish along U.S. Highway 93.

There are 20 miles of trail that are maintained and protected by the Whitefish Legacy Partners, crossing such places as Lion Mountain.

Plans call for even more trail to be built in the future.

The new Woods Lake section, which officially opened Sept. 14, offers hikers and bikers a loop trail around the lake before connecting back to the existing Whitefish Trail.

One section of the new trail, a 2.5-mile lollipop, will also offer a Woods Lake vista and overlook.

How To Get There:

From downtown Whitefish, continue north on U.S. Highway 93.

Just past the golf course, veer right on the Lion Mountain Road.

A sign for the Lion Mountain Trailhead will come up on the right.
