Glacier Edges Butte in Shootout, Advances to AA State Semifinals

Logan Jones scored four touchdowns, including two in key moments of the fourth quarter, and Glacier held on to defeat Butte 62-55 in the first round of the Class AA football playoffs at Legends Stadium last Friday.

Winners of eight straight, the Wolfpack (10-1 overall) advanced to the semifinal round for the third year in a row and will host Great Falls C.M. Russell (7-4) at 7 p.m., Friday. Glacier is attempting to advance to the state title game for the first time in program history.

Glacier survived a wild, offensive shootout that featured 16 touchdowns and 1,068 combined yards. Senior running back Noah James was lost in the first quarter after suffering a leg injury and did not return.

After Butte tied the game for the first time since kickoff with seven minutes remaining, Jones scored back-to-back TDs, including a 15-yard interception that proved to be the deciding score.

Jones finished with 116 yards on 16 carries and 143 yards receiving on seven catches. Evan Epperly had four catches for 75 yards and two touchdowns. Todd Ogden added a TD in the fourth quarter and Brandon Purdy notched a pair of field goals, including a 40-yarder in the first quarter. Quarterback Brady McChesney passed for 330 yards and rushed for 54 yards and a TD.

The Wolfpack will now try to advance to the state championship game for the first time. Glacier edged C.M. Russell in the second week of the season, 20-14 in Great Falls. The Rustlers rolled Helena Capital, 55-28, in the opening round of the playoffs last week in Helena. Bozeman cruised past Missoula Sentinel, 42-17, and Billings Skyview upset Helena, 34-28.
