Hungry for More?

By Beacon Staff

This week, it’s the movie we’ve all been waiting for: “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.” And then we’re going to have to wait another whole year for the next one! Not fair.

In the meantime, if you’ve caught the “Hunger Games” fever, how about some other great trilogies with disturbing possible futures, teens who face potential death, and plenty of action and heroics? As a bonus, all of these trilogies will also be made into movies in the coming year.

“The Maze Runner” trilogy by James Dashner. Thomas wakes with a blank memory in the middle of a huge stone maze, surrounded by other boys who remember nothing from before. They must learn how to solve the maze and avoid the razor-sharp creatures that patrol it at night.

“Divergent” trilogy by Veronica Roth. In a future Chicago, all 16-year-olds take a test to help them choose from five factions. They must leave their families and friends and become part of their new faction, which determines how they live, work, dress and think.

“Chaos Walking” trilogy by Patrick Ness. In a pioneer town on a planet where everyone can hear each other’s thoughts, Todd and his dog, Manchee, stumble upon a secret that forces them to flee into the woods. What Todd finds makes him question everything he has always known.

Before you begin reading, be sure to cancel your weekend plans and stock up on snacks. You won’t want to put down these stories.

On Friday, Nov. 22, from 4 to 6 p.m., join fellow “Hunger Games” fans at the Main Library in Kalispell for a pre-party featuring live music, face painting, games and a movie ticket door prize. All ages are invited to celebrate the new film, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.”
