EXPLORE: Skinning Up Big Mountain

By Beacon Staff

Thanksgiving is all about spending time with family and eating in excess.

But if you want to work off those pounds after a big meal, then skinning up Big Mountain will do the trick.

The lifts at Whitefish Mountain Resort don’t open for another week, but that doesn’t mean you can’t sweat your way to the top.

A common route up is Toni Matt. During ski season it’s especially important to know that you can only travel uphill on Toni Matt (from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and the East Route (from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.).

During the ski season, the routes are marked “Uphill” and you should always hike up the left side only.

You should also be familiar with the Uphill Traffic Policy of Whitefish Mountain Resort and the Uphill Skier Responsibility Code.

As always, traveling uphill should be pursued at one’s own risk.

How to get there:

From downtown Whitefish take Baker Avenue north over the train tracks, where it becomes Wisconsin Avenue.

Continue on Wisconsin, turning right on Big Mountain Road up to the mountain.
