Walsh Says He Wants Interim Senate Appointment

By Beacon Staff

HELENA — Lt. Gov. John Walsh says he is interested in serving the remainder of U.S. Sen. Max Baucus’ term if Baucus is confirmed at the next ambassador to China.

Walsh already has announced his candidacy for Baucus’ seat in the 2014 election.

Walsh told Lee Newspapers of Montana Saturday he wants the interim appointment if Baucus leaves before his term expires in January 2015.

The Democratic lieutenant governor previously told The Associated Press that he had not thought about an interim appointment.

He said at the time that Gov. Steve Bullock had not approached him and would not speculate as to what Bullock would do.

Walsh faces former Lt. Gov. John Bohlinger and Dirk Adams for the Democratic nomination.
