Vigil to be Held for Slain Exchange Student

By Beacon Staff

A vigil is planned in the Montana city where a 17-year-old German exchange student was gunned down in a homeowner’s garage.

The gathering for Diren Dede is at 9 p.m. Friday at the Fort Missoula soccer fields.

Prosecutors say 29-year-old Markus Kaarma killed Dede early Sunday by shooting blindly at an intruder in his garage.

Kaarma’s attorney says he plans to plead not guilty to deliberate homicide. A hearing has been set for May 12, but court officials say it is subject to change.

Ribbons in the German national flag colors of black, red and gold are on display on the mailboxes in the neighborhood where Dede was killed, with the exception of Kaarma’s mailbox.

Kaarma was released on bond Monday. A sign on his door says “No Solicitors.”
