MISSOULA — The city of Missoula plans a safety and accountability audit to evaluate the way victims of sexual assault are treated from the initial report to prosecution of the case.
Mayor John Engen, Detective Capt. Mike Coyler and former Missoula County commissioner Janet Stevens Donahue announced the audit Tuesday, saying it was part of the city’s 2013 agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice over complaints about how sexual assault reports were handled in the city.
Stevens Donahue is administering the six-month audit, which also will examine the police department’s response to sexual assault cases and make any needed suggestions for improvement.
Coyler says the audit will include creating focus groups of victims and creating an anonymous survey for victims to provide feedback.
