Avery, Johnston Lead at State Junior Golf Championships

State tournament concludes today in Laurel

Glacier’s Teigan Avery jumped ahead in the first round of Montana State Junior Golf Championship at the Laurel Golf Club on Monday.

Avery shot a 1-over 73 and leads the girls 16-17 age division by five strokes. Avery won the state junior title in the 14-15 division last year.

Ryggs Johnston of Libby leads on the boys 14-15 division after carding a 2-over 74. He leads by one stroke.

Johnston placed second in the 12-13 division last year and Billings’ Joey Moore, who is sitting two shots back in second place, won the title.

Other local competitors include Glacier’s Tommy Mann, who shot an 82 and Whitefish’s Cooper Donahue, who shot a 78. Libby’s Bucky Crippen shot a 79 and sits in second place in the 13-under division, followed by Polson’s Jack Johnston, who carded 88. Kalispell’s Brayden Aurish carded a 110. Heather Frank of Polson shot 119.

The tournament concludes today.
